School can be a stressful experience for students who do not have a solid command of the English language. It can not only be difficult for these students to understand course content in a language they are only beginning to master, but often these students are new arrivals to the country and can be experiencing a culture shock. In the 2014-2015 school year, English language learners accounted for 9.4% of the overall American student population.
